Treating tobacco dependency and the wider aim of reducing smoking prevalence to less than 5% is one of 2 key prevention priorities in the North East & North Cumbria.  Ruth & Joanna will share the journey within the region to build on NICE guidance and systematically treat tobacco  dependency in the NHS.

Smokefree pregnancy and the Dorset model; supporting the pregnant smoker’s significant other to quit smoking as part of a holistic approach

The ‘Dorset’ Model was formed in 2019 to enable breaking down some of the barriers a pregnant mother quitting smoking faces when her significant other continues to smoke. Faye’s presentation will demonstrate how a quality improvement pilot to improve the quit environment for the pregnant smoker and create a smoke free home became BAU and spread across Dorset’s Smoking in Pregnancy Services.

Vaping within a mental health hospital – The Nightingale Trial

How switching from provision of a basic disposable e-cigarette to more modern products was received by inpatients at a mental health rehab ward in Dorset. Plus other aspects to consider in supporting smokers with mental ill health who do not always wish to, or feel they are able to quit, to escape the harm that combustible tobacco causes.

Evaluation of the CPIT III smoking in pregnancy incentive trial

Lesley will talk about the phase III multi-centre randomised controlled trial CPIT III. CPIT III was set up to test the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of offering shopping voucher incentives to help pregnant women engage with stop smoking services and quit smoking. An insight into the challenges of conducting a pragmatic trial involving shopping voucher incentives and trial progress to date will be discussed.

Smoking cessation treatment for people with depression and anxiety

Katherine will discuss smoking cessation and mental health, patient and health care professionals' views about integrating smoking cessation treatment into outpatient psychological services for common mental illness, and the ESCAPE Trial - a randomised controlled feasibility trial testing a bespoke smoking cessation intervention for people with depression/anxiety in mental health settings.

Obstacles to 'One NHS' cessation pathways will be explored and how 'One NHS' should be patient centred.
